Horse Riding in Wilderness Trials - Changes to Plans of Management

As noted on the NSW Environment Website, "Horse riding in wilderness amendments to plans of management for the Far South Coast Escarpment Parks, Kosciuszko National Park, and Mummel Gulf National Park and State Conservation Area have been adopted by the Minister for the Environment on 13 February 2019.

 AFA Horse Riding01

Horse riding was trialled in the Far South Coast Escarpment Parks of Deua National Park and Monga National Park, Kosciuszko National Park and Mummel Gulf National Park, between April 2014 and April 2016.

After considering outcomes from the trial and continuing stakeholder interest, proposed amendments were made for the 3 plans of management to enable horse riding to continue in the locations that were part of the trial.

These amendments have been adopted by the Minister."

Great news for many responsible stakeholders and Access for All (AFA). Access for All was formed in around 1999 following the declaration of wilderness areas without the knowledge of the presence of a network of historic bridle tracks.

Braidwood's Almost Forgotten Bridle and Pack Tracks

Peter Smith our valued historian and author of popular book "The Deua River Track" will be giving an illuminating account of the history of the many bridle and pack tracks which served Braidwood and its goldfields at the Braidwood and District Historical Society's 2019 Annual Dinner.

But it’s not just about tracks; it’s about people, explorers, adventurers, bushrangers, police, pioneers and settlers who depended on these tracks not only for commerce, but also for their survival.

Peter’s presentation includes snippets of recorded interviews with now deceased pioneers, photographs, maps and a modern day video of a recent ride.

Peter is also the President of the Braidwood and District Historical Society - see link

Details have been emailed to Access for All members.

The trials of opening some heritage bridle tracks through Wilderness areas has been underway for some time now.

For Access for All members and others who have ridden/walked on any of the trial tracks recently, they are asked to complete a survey (for the NPWS) which can be found HERE

The survey can be completed each time you use the tracks during the trial period (2014-2016).
